About Our Rodent Control Service

Image
rodent exclusion

Rodent infestations are a common challenge for homeowners in coastal urban areas, especially those with older properties. The combination of warm, humid climates and dense vegetation creates an ideal environment for these pests. As neighborhoods develop and expand, rodents are often displaced from their natural habitats, leading them to seek shelter and food sources in residential areas.

At Best Home & Property Services, we understand the unique challenges posed by our region's climate and urban landscape. Our rodent control services utilize advanced exclusion techniques and eco-friendly products to effectively manage and prevent infestations. We employ specialized exclusion devices designed to seal entry points and prevent future rodent access, ensuring long-term protection for your home.

  • Bait Station
  • Barrier Wall

Foundation Vent Pest Guard

A rodent-proof foundation vent cover is important because it protects both the structure of your home and the health of the occupants. A rodent-proof cover blocks these openings with heavy-duty metal mesh that animals can’t chew through.

Sub-Siding Gap Shield

A sub-siding gap shield (also called a siding-gap rodent barrier) is important because it closes off one of the most common and overlooked rodent entry points on a home: the gap between the bottom edge of the siding and the foundation.

Many types of siding (vinyl, fiber-cement, wood) naturally sit slightly off the foundation to allow drainage and ventilation. Rodents exploit this gap to access the wall cavity, crawlspace, or attic, where they can nest and cause damage. A gap-shield creates a chew-proof metal barrier that rodents can't get through.

Roof Ridge Guard

A roof ridge guard (or rodent-proof ridge vent barrier) is important because the ridge vent—running along the peak of the roof—is one of the least protected yet most critical parts of a home’s ventilation system. Standard ridge vents often have lightweight plastic or thin mesh that rodents can chew or push through. A ridge guard upgrades that area with a chew-proof, intrusion-resistant barrier.

Rodent Bait Station

A rodent bait station (also called a bait box) is important because it allows you to use rodent poison or bait safely, effectively, and legally. It protects people, pets, and wildlife while ensuring rodents actually consume the bait. Rodents prefer to eat in protected, enclosed spaces, not out in the open. A bait station mimics a natural hiding spot and helps rodents feel safe enough to enter, feed, and return.

Rodent Barrier Wall

A rodent barrier wall (also known as a rodent-proof barrier) is an engineered physical barrier designed to permanently block rodents, creating a long-term, chew-proof perimeter.

Using a galvanized steel rodent wall in your crawlspace is a highly effective way to prevent rodents, such as rats, mice, and squirrels, from entering or nesting in your home. Small entry points can easily allow a rodent to squeeze through into your crawl.

A galvanized steel barrier can seal off entry points effectively. Galvanized steel is resistant to rust, wear, and corrosion, making it a long-lasting material that can withstand conditions in crawlspaces. It can also prevent rodents from gaining access to critical areas such as wiring, plumbing, and insulation, causing damage. Using a stainless steel rodent wall in your crawlspace is an investment in long-term pest prevention, home maintenance, and hygiene. It’s a highly effective way to protect your home from the damaging effects of rodents.

Frequently Asked Questions: Rodent Control

Are rodent bait stations safe to use around pets and children?

Yes, bait stations are enclosed, tamper-resistant boxes designed specifically so pets, kids, and non-target wildlife can't access the bait inside. The enclosed design also works with rodent behavior, since rodents prefer to feed in a hidden, protected spot rather than out in the open. Stations are typically placed along exterior walls or in crawl spaces, away from areas where kids or pets regularly play.

How do I know if exclusion work actually solved the problem, and rodents aren't still getting in?

The clearest sign of success is the absence of new droppings, gnaw marks, or noises in walls or the attic for several weeks after the work is completed. Since exclusion seals physical entry points rather than relying only on bait, it addresses the root cause instead of just reducing the population temporarily. New gaps can form over time as a house settles, which is why a warranty check-up can catch a new opening before rodents find it.

Can I just use traps or poison myself instead of professional exclusion work?

Traps and store-bought bait can reduce the rodents currently inside, but they don't address the entry points that let new rodents in after the current ones are gone. Without sealing gaps like sub-siding openings or foundation vents, a home effectively stays open for the next mouse or rat to find the same way in. Professional exclusion combines removal with permanently sealing those access points, which is why it holds up over years rather than needing to be repeated every time activity returns.

What factors affect the cost of rodent control?

Cost depends mainly on how many entry points need to be sealed and which exclusion products, like vent guards, gap shields, or a full barrier wall, your home needs. Homes with an active infestation that also need bait stations and follow-up trapping cost more than a straightforward exclusion job on a rodent-free home. Crawl space size and how accessible it is for installing a barrier wall can also affect labor time.

Is there a time of year when rodents are more likely to get into a house?

Rodent activity typically increases in fall as outdoor temperatures drop and mice and rats look for warm shelter, making September through November a common time for new intrusions. Coastal storms can also push rodents toward higher, drier ground inside homes, so activity sometimes spikes after major storm events too. Sealing entry points before fall, rather than after rodents are already inside, is more effective than trying to exclude them once they've settled in.

Our technician, Rob, is an expert. He always asks about what pest problems we are experiencing and will treat accordingly. He provided our mosquito services all year and went the extra mile to ensure that our entire property was protected and we could enjoy the outdoors all year long. Any time he notices something in the yard, he will let us know, but is never pushy about adding services. He completed our termite services many times and always leaves everything looking nice and orderly. When we had trouble with mice, he came back to ensure that the problem was resolved.

When I called Best because I was expecting a typical pushy sales appointment like most companies because I kept hearing noises in the walls of my home at night time. The office sent out Regional Staff member Tyler Jones came and he did a whole home inspection found out that I had rats inside of my home. He was extremely pleasant to deal with not pushy at all and explained everything very thoroughly throughout the 3.5 hour inspection. We did a whole attic remediation and Best installed their attic insulation called Comfort Shield in the attic space, sealed up the entry holes.
